There’s a reason a humid 80° summer day feels hotter than a dry one — and the same physics runs in reverse in the fall. As the weather cools and your heat starts running, indoor air dries out fast. Dry air lets moisture evaporate off your skin more quickly, and evaporation cools you, so the very same 70° room feels noticeably colder when the air is bone dry than when it’s comfortably humid.

  • Dress the cold surfaces. Cellular or lined curtains over big windows, an area rug on a cold floor, and closing blinds after dark all cut the radiant heat loss your body feels most.
  • Seal the obvious drafts. Weatherstripping around doors, a draft stopper at the bottom, and caulk or foam gaskets at leaky windows and outlets are cheap, DIY, and pay you back all winter.
  • Add a little humidity. A room humidifier — or a whole-home humidifier tied into your heating system — makes the same temperature feel warmer and easier on your skin and sinuses.
  • Mind the thermostat’s blind spot. Make sure it isn’t mounted in direct sun, above a supply vent, or in the one room that always runs warm, and make sure vents in the cold rooms are open and unblocked.
