What’s actually happening when it lights then quits

Here’s the sequence every time your furnace starts:

  1. The thermostat calls for heat.
  2. The igniter glows hot (or a spark fires).
  3. The gas valve opens and the burners light.
  4. The flame sensor detects the flame and sends a tiny electrical signal back to the control board saying, “We have fire.”
  5. As long as that signal holds, the furnace keeps running.

If the control board opens the gas but doesn’t get that confirmation signal within a couple of seconds, it does exactly what it’s designed to do: it shuts the gas valve immediately so raw gas can’t build up. That’s the shutoff you’re seeing. The furnace lit — but it couldn’t confirm it lit, so its safety logic pulled the plug.

Why a dirty flame sensor is the usual suspect in fall

The flame sensor works by conducting a very small current through the flame. Over time, the tip picks up a fine coating — carbon, oxidation, and dust — that acts like insulation. Once that film builds up enough, the sensor can no longer read the flame it’s sitting in, even though the burners are clearly lit.

Fall is prime season for this because your furnace has been sitting idle all summer while the AC carried the load. This is why “just clean the sensor” isn’t always the whole story. If the flame is unstable for a mechanical reason, a spotless sensor still won’t get a steady signal — the furnace will keep shutting off until the real cause is addressed.

After several tries, many furnaces “lock out”

Most furnaces won’t retry forever. After a set number of failed ignition attempts — often three — the control board goes into lockout: it stops trying entirely for an hour or so to avoid dumping gas over and over. If you’ve been listening to your furnace try and quit and then it goes silent and cold, it likely locked itself out. You can sometimes reset it by cutting power at the switch or breaker for a minute, but if it locks out again, that’s the furnace telling you the underlying issue is still there. Resetting it repeatedly just delays the fix.

DIY or call a pro?

A flame sensor sits in the gas train, and getting to it means shutting off gas and power, pulling the sensor, and cleaning the tip gently enough not to damage it. Some hands-on homeowners do this successfully. But two things make us cautious about recommending it as a first move:

First, it involves the gas system and the furnace’s safety controls — the parts that are there specifically to keep unburned gas from accumulating. Second, as the list above shows, the sensor is frequently not the only thing going on, and a cleaning that ignores an unstable flame or a weak igniter just sends you back to square one on the next cold night.
